How To Make Jamaican Sorrel Drink

Sorrel has traditionally been a beverage made and consumed around Christmas time, but its popularity has grown and has become a drink that you can have all year round. With its signature taste, authentic Sorrel drinks should have you knocking your chest and yelling ginger. This spiced holiday drink will leave you feeling jolly.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of sorrel
  • Ginger
  • Brown Sugar
  • pimento/cloves
  • White rum (optional)
  • cinnamon (optional)

Directions

  1. Wash sorrel thoroughly and grate ginger
  2. Boil a gallon of water and then add the shredded ginger
  3. Next, add the sorrel and let boil
  4. Add pimento or cloves
  5. Remove from heat after 5-10 mins
  6. Let it steep for 5 to 7 hours
  7. Strain/ sorrel mixture
  8. Sweeten to taste with brown sugar and add rum if desired
  9. Chill in refrigerator

Optional Sides

  • Jamaican fruitcake

Notes

  • Rum or Wine can be used to make drink alcoholic
  • For a kid-friendly sorrel just leave out the rum and use less ginger
  • Serve cold with ice
